saigon, saigon (and many, many more)

BG_FUJI_VIET-145Christmas in Ho Chi Minh was turning out to be a very good time, we spent the days walking around the city, visiting places, wishing people happy Christmas  and eating.  Lunchtime became a regular visit to the Banh Mi shop round the corner from our hotel near to the Ben Thanh market.  The Banh Mi were French bread rolls filled with crispy pork belly, pickled vegetables and chillies.  These went down a treat, washed down by freshly squeezed orange juice and all for a ridiculously cheap price.

Nights were spent with my cousin and his family eating all kinds of food (the pork was meltingly succulent, the frogs and snails so- so).  Then onwards to one or more bar.  HCMC has its fair share of skyscrapers and most seem to be outdoing each other for the highest bar.  We got into the Chill Bar on the 26th floor of the AB tower wearing shoes and trousers, and everywhere else in jandals.  Expensive cocktails and clientele, but what a view.

Back down to street level and into Apocalypse Now, cheap drinks but no (and no means no, really no) photography on the dance floor.  Favourite hangout: the Rex Bar and Saigon, Saigon at the Caravelle.  If you’re in HCMC make time to go to Saigon, Saigon, get a seat on the right as you walk in, and have a few drinks soaking up the view out over Lam Son square, the Opera House and across to the Continental Hotel as the sun goes down, with the subdued beeping and buzzing of the traffic below.
